On Sunday 26th February, round two of Six String Social took place at Gas Street Social in Birmingham. The Sunday evening session spotlighted two of Birmingham’s rising indie/ alternative rock outfits: Paradise Circus and The Clause. Straying away from their usual live performances with a full band, Paradise Circus and The Clause performed stripped back, acoustic sets perfect for a relaxed Sunday evening.

Six String Social is an exciting new venture put on by Harry Bozman, presenter and producer of BBC CWR and BBC Introducing West Midlands. Taking place on the last Sunday of every month, Six String Social is an acoustic event that works to showcase local talent in a stripped back, chilled environment. Hosted at Gas Street Social, sprinkled with fairy lights and twinkling candles, Gas Street Social couldn’t be a more perfect fit for Six String’s unplugged events.

Treated with delicious, discounted drinks and food, nothing could be more tempting for your quiet Sunday evening. Opening the string of events Six String Social put on the likes of Jack Cattell and IX. For the second round of events, Paradise Circus and The Clause matched the energy of the event flawlessly.

After a brief introduction from the lovely host, Harry, Paradise Circus’ singer Dave, headed up to the stage. With just vocals and acoustic guitar, Dave provided an intimate and engaging performance drawing the audience in with his captivating voice and emotional lyrics. Tender and heartfelt, Dave locked you into his performance in an almost intoxicating manner. Matching the candle-lit venue perfectly, Dave’s performance was honest and vulnerable showcasing some of Paradise Circus’ recent singles and upcoming releases. Favourites from Dave’s set included Paradise Circus’ new single ‘Fighting’, along with an unreleased track, ‘Sunrise’- scheduled for release this Summer.

Joining Dave on stage for the next set, was Paradise Circus’ Pete. Pete’s beautiful, intricate work on the keys paired perfectly with heart-wrenching, emotional lyrics and Dave’s raw vocals. The pair’s set featured Paradise Circus’ 2021 release ‘Cascade’. Stripped back to just vocals, guitar and keys, the track felt hopelessly intimate and pulled the audience into an emotional rollercoaster. The track, originally wrote on piano, with its emotional nature exposes the complex emotions and relationships that have gone into writing this song. In their set, Dave and Pete also treated us to Paradise Circus’ newest single ‘Sanguinem’. After hearing the release of ‘Sanguinem’, with the full band, experiencing the track in an acoustic setting only made me fall in love with it even more.

After a brief interval with another round of marvellously discounted cocktails and delicious food, it was time for The Clause’s frontman, Pearce, to take centre stage.

Approaching his set with just vocals and acoustic guitar, Pearce was taken away from his usual full band gritty indie rock band environment and stripped back to a more intimate and exposing environment. Whilst experimenting with a more emotional, acoustic sound in his set, a huge strength of Pearce’s performance was how he retained his gritty, unrefined vocals making for an interesting blend of harsher vocals and tender instrumental. Pearce’s set featured a wonderful blend of a few covers and well-chosen original tracks. One of my favourite songs of the set was ‘Never Ending Affair’. Written for The Clause but currently unreleased, this performance was the first time giving the track a spin. With heartbreaking vocals and lyrics, this song grabbed my attention and refused to let go. Pearce’s set also featured ‘Where Are You Know?’, The Clause’s most emotional release to date. Seeing this track in an acoustic, candle lit setting now seems like the only appropriate away to listen to it.

Six String Social struck gold with February’s acoustic night. Seeing some of Birmingham’s favourite local indie bands stripped back in an intimate, atmospheric environment was a major highlight of the month. You can expect future Six String Social events on the last Sunday of every month. March’s event just passed last week with sets from Nath Brooks and O’Halloran, but you can catch the next round of Six String Social on the 30th April.
