Starting off with the track’s title: discomfort is evoked, alongside feelings of anticipation, excitement and disappointment bundled into one. The duo, speaking of the track, outlined that ‘the Scratchcard Feeling is the feeling of duality when perception from the outside world doesn’t quite line up with what’s going on inside your head.’ With the track title alone, this could not be more accurate.
Otherworldly, transcendent synths introduce us to the song, teamed with the mesmerising sound of Milkie Way’s voice, in which her Irish accent can really be heard gleaming through. The opening verse sung by Milkie features a teasing approach, ‘Everybody’s looking at me please, please, please, Is there something caught between my teeth, teeth, teeth.’ Milkie’s clean vocals paired with Sam Matlock’s intense growls is an intoxicating mix.
This release illustrates the nu-metal up and comers dabbling deeper into the world of techno/electro, with the track being closely compared to the work of the iconic techno-rock leaders: The Prodigy. The duo playfully includes their typical god- complex persona teamed with a darker approach, ‘Cheap thrills, Cheap meals, Little deals, Little Pills, Makes you ill, Makes you sick.’ This juxtaposed lyrical inclusion gives the song a hugely experimental feel.
The lyrics ‘So what we act like we’re famous? How could you blame us, we’re just entertainers,’ demonstrate the duo’s attitude to their growth in the music scene. There’s something so enthralling about Milkie and Sam’s almost pretentious attitude. They know they are taking the alt-rock scene by storm, and there is no shame in them doing so.
