ALTESCAPE have been lucky enough to speak directly to Native World, and gain a deeper insight into the groups influences whilst, discovering the driving force behind the latest EP.
Native World are a four-piece group from Indianapolis; the members of the band include: bassist, Sam, guitarist, Julian, drummer, Anthony, and vocalist, Sarah. The group draws a fusion of genres into their unique sound, with influences from J-Rock, Math Rock, and Pop.
From the J-Rock scene the band have said that, groups such as: Ling Taste Sigure, Polkadot Stingray and Tricot, have been a big inspiration for the style that they aim to achieve. In terms of the band's Math Rock inspired style, artists such as: Covet and Chon, have evidently played a role in influencing the intricate, and flowing guitar melodies we see in 'Blossom'. The EP, also, highlights Native World's inspiration from Pop, this is mainly emphasised through Sarah's vocals. The group, named Pop influences such as: Paramore, Japanese Breakfast, Carly Rae Jepson and Warpaint. In the bridge of 'Countdown', from the latest EP, we can really hear the Hayley William's influence in Sarah's beautiful vocal work.
After the release of the band's debut, self-titled album, the band experienced the departure of vocalist, Alexandria. However, this did not halt the band's progress; they took some time off to discover what would come of the next chapter for the band, and found a suited new vocalist Sarah. Asking the band whether there was a drastic change to the band's style and dynamic, after the entrance of a new vocalist, they said: 'There is a definite change from the previous material. The more we wrote, the more naturally things sort of fell into the sound you hear on Blossom. Bringing Sarah on board felt 100% natural, and writing together meshed together perfectly'.
The latest EP, 'Blossom', seems like a real advancement for the band, and the development of their distinct style can be clearly seen as huge potential. In regard to 'Blossom', Native World said that, 'This EP is a small departure from the first, with that we really felt like this release would be a fresh start for us to push the sound we really wanted to build upon.' The group went on to say that the EP is 'centred around a theme of personal growth, budding into new situations.'
We wanted to find out the band's personal favourite track from the EP. After conversing, the group decided that they all have individual favourites.
Sam said, '"Countdown" and "Sunbeam" would have to be my favourites. Both felt really great to write throughout the entire process. It was really easy to feel the excitement between everyone once we finished demoing both of those songs.'
Anthony claimed that, 'My personal favourite track is "Celeste" because of how it started out as just as mini session, but ended up becoming the lead single. The journey that song took from beginning to finish,'
Guitarist, Julian said that '"Countdown" would have to be my favourite song- it had my favourite synth contributions, and we got to weave in a cool atmosphere with the guitar effects. It's definitely my favourite to play.'
Finally, Sarah gave us a glimpse into how each song on the EP was formed, and her personal favourite. '"Glimmer" was the first song Julian and I wrote. "Gone" was the first one we all wrote together as a band. "Celeste" was just a little snippet that we turned into something bigger. "Countdown" was written after the most chaotic party we've ever had. For me, it's probably "Sunbeam". I wrote "Sunbeam" for the guys. I saw how badly they wanted to do more, BE more as a band. I wrote that song as a promise to them.'
The lead single, 'Celeste', has been the only song off the EP that we have seen a music video for so far. However, asking the group if we can expect anymore, they said, 'it's been discussed, so we'd say there is a chance we'll end up putting something else together.'
We are thrilled to have been able to speak to Native World, and can't wait to hear more of the band's future creations.
