Ahead of releasing her latest single ‘red eye’, Mani Jnx has given ALTESCAPE an in-depth insight into her journey as an upcoming alternative pop/indie star.
Growing in popularity in the Birmingham scene as the lead vocalist of alt-rock/indie group Jinx, Mani has since branched out on her own forming her solo project- Mani Jnx. Speaking on her transition to working as a solo artist, Mani tells us ‘I'm a huge control freak especially when it comes to my music, so I think being a solo artist is a much better fit to who I am’. Taking influence from ‘the likes of Mitski, Clairo, Leith ross, Adrianne Lenker, Beabadoobee, Boy Genius as well as some more r&b inspired artists like Daniel Caesar, sza, Jorja Smith & Brent Faiyaz, ‘Mani has morphed a concoction of beautiful sounds into her own unique and transcendent style.
Having released 3 incredible tracks so far, Mani spoke to us about her personal favourite ‘bruises’: ‘it's a song that I wrote, composed & recorded in full all in under 24 hours, and I loved how it came out from the first listen. I think it’s a song that came naturally to me, at a time where I needed to write it and get those feelings out. it’s the most vulnerable of all my songs, by far - and it really takes a lot for me to be vulnerable even in music’. Speaking so passionately and emotionally about her music, it is blaringly obvious the brutal honesty and raw passion that goes into Mani’s songwriting.
‘Drown’ Mani Jnx’ latest single was released in early August last year, and lucky for us Mani was able to delve into detail on the inspiration behind the track, as well as the process of writing it- ‘drown is a song I wrote for and about my best friend about a year ago now, about our journey together & fears I had of us going forward to uni and maybe drifting. The process was pretty quick, quicker than most of my songs since I usually write the first half then come back to it a while later to finish the rest of it which makes drown really different, since I got it all done within maybe a month or two from start to end product. it’s a track I’m really proud of’.
Alluring to her upcoming release ‘red eye’, (coming out on the 29th February) Mani speaks both optimistically and vaguely. ‘red eye has been in the works in total over two years - there's a section at the end, which was written around Christmas 2021, which we added to the end of the song not long ago. It’s always been a collaborative piece, which I won’t say much about for now, but essentially this is just the Mani Jnx solo version of the track’.
Not only is Mani Jnx releasing her new single ‘red eye’ in the next month, but she is also hinting at bigger things to come in the near future: ‘I do have plans for playing live, but I'll be honest, it’s not something I plan on making a common occurrence (maybe that's more reason to keep an eye out for gig dates)’!
You can listen to Mani's releases on all major streaming platforms, and you can catch her live in just a few weeks time.
