On the 27th March, LOXZ finally released their newest single ‘Gen Z’. It feels like a lifetime since their debut EP Third Eye- released in June 2022, and I am so glad the girls are back! But this time, LOXZ are back with a full line-up: stronger than ever.
The riot grrrl 4-piece is made up of lead vocalist, Lauren, bassist, Julz, guitarist, Scarlett and drummer, Annabel. Since LOXZ achieved their full line up, the band seems to have had a surge of power, fuelled with fresh energy and brimming with empowerment. Their new single ‘Gen Z’ has been released ahead of the outfit’s upcoming EP Pretty In Pink, set to come out at the start of May.
‘Gen Z’ breaks through the sea of generic punk releases with a carefully crafted and exciting fresh sound. LOXZ were already breaking into the Riot Grrrl genre in Third Eye, but ‘Gen Z’ has LOXZ reclaiming the remanence of Riot Grrrl for themselves and reviving it.
LOXZ outlined that for 'Gen Z', songwriter and frontwoman, Lauren was mainly inspired by "the generational differences that can affect some relationships. The lyrics are about unrequited love, where one person could have different life experiences than the other person and it causes conflict".
‘Gen Z’ pumps in with classic LOXZ chants, followed by insanely catchy lyrics. There’s something so endearing about the DIY nature of this song, from the gritty punk sound teamed with piercing female vocals, to the completely DIY music video, LOXZ continue to make their fans feel at home and a part of their journey. The track continues to play with LOXZ’s bouncy punk sound whilst toying with squealing guitar riffs. Groovy riffs and almost anthemic vocals, makes this track incredibly memorable, and I can’t wait to hear this one live.
From layered guitar riffs and harmonising vocals to expert songwriting, LOXZ’s growth as an outfit is exemplified in this track. Whilst once again broadcasting LOXZ’s growing potential as an all-female power punk band, the one thing I adore about this track is how LOXZ continue to let their vibrant personalities bubble through- especially in ‘Gen Z’s music video. The video places the girls in a foil covered room with pink balloons and lights, in which they are caught jamming out to their new single. The experimental and innovative nature of this video, teamed with the bright, smiley appearance from the group only makes the effect of ‘Gen Z’ even stronger.
Speaking briefly to LOXZ about the release of their upcoming EP, Pretty In Pink, the outfit has expressed that "since we now have an all-female lineup, it has influenced the sound of our upcoming EP and we are really excited to share it with the world. We had to take a short break from gigging to focus on writing and recording. But we honestly can't wait to get back on-stage and play this new EP with some oldies at The Sunflower Lounge on the 1st May 2023!"
You can now listen to ‘Gen Z’ on all major streaming platforms but be sure to head over to YouTube to catch the official music video.
