The Teals headlined The Sunflower Lounge, in Birmingham on the 29th November, with support from Domestic Love and Swon.

Flowing with the sounds of indie, pop-punk and alternative rock, the night was another excellently organised display of talent put on by our favourite DYAF Promotions. The night’s event had a special sprinkle of flamboyance and cheeky personalities with the support from Domestic Love and Swon complimenting the headline wonderfully.

Opening up the night was Swon. The group kicked off the night with bubbling energy and an aura of excitement. With grinning faces beaming down from the stage, Swon brought a wholesome and joyous atmosphere to their performance. Swon currently has 2 singles released on all major streaming platforms including their debut single ‘Ignorance Is Bliss’ and their latest release ‘Stacy’.

‘Stacy’ was released the day after their performance at The Sunflower Lounge and was my favourite track that the band played live. This song has an interesting story behind it, with it being written about someone not named Stacy at all, not even close. ‘Stacy’ is actually written about someone called ‘Reuben’, but Swon’s frontman Jimmy expressed that Stacy was much easy to rhyme with. Swon’s set predominantly featured beautiful original tracks showcasing their unique and expressive sound, but the outfit also played a couple of well-chosen covers including ‘Long Train Runnin’ by The Doobie Brothers and ‘The Riverboat Song’ by Ocean Colour Scene. You can catch Swon playing local live shows in Birmingham and you can listen to recent releases ‘Stacy’ and ‘Ignorance Is Bliss’ now. We are hoping to see more released music from Swon in 2023- I particularly hope their next release is their phenomenal original track ‘Penguin Song’.

Next up was Domestic Love. Domestic Love struck the stage with colour and vibrance shaking the venue with their pumped-up punk sound. The outfit ties together the sounds of indie rock and the themes and energy of the punk movement. Domestic Love utilised this set to showcase their distinct original sound with their set featuring Domestic Love originals including ‘How Easy’, ‘Bonfire’, ‘The Crowd’, ‘Madness’ and ‘Violence’. My favourite original track that the band played live had to be their final song ‘Violence’. This track just has so much energy and forces adrenaline into your system. Another favourite from Domestic Love’s set was their cover of ‘Danny Nedelko’ by Idles. The track worked perfectly with the band’s sound and emphasised the level of energy being exerted into Domestic Love’s performance. The group currently have 4 tracks released on all major streaming platforms, the most recent being their single ‘Violence’ released on the 29th of November.

Finally, The Teals. The act we have all been waiting for. Striking the audience with their unique pop-punk, alternative-indie sound, The Teals have birthed a sound that incorporates the driving energy of pop-punk and the sentimental soppiness of indie creating a selection of beautiful original songs. The Teals approached the stage with a subtle level of nervous excitement but began their performance with cheeky smirks and smiles, warming the crowd into their show. The Teals’ set featured a good selection of original songs showcasing the band’s undeniable talent and distinct aura. Kicking off their set with ‘Catastrophe’, the audience was treated to surf-rock styled guitar riffs and energetic, positive instrumental, combined with hopelessly honest and pessimistic vocals. This track was one of my favourites of the night, along with the band’s final original track ‘Dear Eva’. ‘Dear Eva’ takes the audience to a more melancholic place, whilst somehow providing an almost reminiscent, nostalgic effect.

The Teals also treated the audience to a selection of covers, with the favourites being ‘All The Small Things’ by Blink 182 and ‘Buddy Holly’ by Weezer’- both ultimate crowd pleaser tracks. With the crowd demanding ‘ONE MORE SONG’ The Teals did not disappoint and slammed straight into Stacy’s Mom by Fountains Of Wayne. You can now listen to The Teals debut EP ‘Psychonautics’ on all major streaming platforms, and hopefully the outfit will have more new releases early next year. You can find out more about The Teals in our post-gig interview set to be released soon...
