On Thursday the 8th of September, Comic Sans headlined The Rainbow Pub in Digbeth, Birmingham, with support from JINX and Amber Sky. Jam-packed with alternative, queer mayhem, the night flew by with a flurry of incredible music, vibrant dance moves, and great personalities.
Put on by Do Yourself A Favour promotions (DYAF), Thursday’s gig focussed on showcasing LGBTQ+ artists in celebration of Pride. Being the promoter’s first event, this was a beautiful starting point for DYAF emphasising the significance of female and LGBTQ+ representation on the musical stage. You can expect more of this from future DYAF gigs.
The basement venue in The Rainbow Pub suited the energy of the night perfectly. With pride flags and pride lollipops available at the door, entering the venue transported you into a state of euphoria.

Kicking off the night was Amber Sky, vivacious and elegant, this band introduced the evening with confidence and spirit. With a mix of well-chosen covers and a scatter of original tracks, Amber Sky blessed the audience with their funky riffs and grunge tones. The Birmingham based 4-piece outfit have been together just under a year and have so far released 3 singles together. Their latest track ‘Wait For Me’ was released on the 25th of August; the band at the moment are perhaps best known for their well-received debut single ‘Amsterdam’. This track was, undoubtedly, a favourite of Amber Sky’s set.

Next up was JINX, spurring the night on further with queer magic; this band got the crowd moving with iconic covers of Rihanna’s ‘S&M’, and girl in red’s ‘i wanna be your girlfriend’. Alongside playing excellently chosen covers, our favourite track played by the band had to be their original ‘Fem for Fem’. This track had unmatched energy, and wonderfully highlighted the aura of the band, not to mention fitting impeccably with the atmosphere of the night. JINX is yet to have any tracks released but can be found playing local live shows regularly. In fact, you can catch JINX at another DYAF show on the 10th of October at The Sunflower Lounge, in Birmingham, supporting headliner VEG.

Quirky, queer and shamelessly themselves, Comic Sans brightened the room with their presence. From the start of their set to the end, Comic Sans were ruthlessly authentic embracing any hurdles or hiccups that appeared in their set whilst performing their original tracks with utter confidence and style. The set featured an array of Comic Sans’ originals, favourites being ‘MAN’, ‘Talk Show Host’ and ‘Public Service Announcement’. In fact, the crowd got treated to ‘Public Service Announcement’ twice. Although the first attempt seemed to have occurred seamlessly with complete passion and vivid energy, somehow Comic Sans managed to top it with their second attempt. Speaking to the band in a post-gig interview, guitarist Loz, outlined that she wasn’t 100% happy with the guitar in the first attempt, therefore being their most recent re-recorded track, it only felt appropriate to give ‘Public Service Announcement’ another run through. The energy on stage was completely reflected by the crowd’s enthusiasm and passion. Bubbling excitement, and total enjoyment of each song, meant that the audience felt fully enthralled in the set.

Comic Sans currently have 6 singles out, including their re-recorded version of ‘Public Service Announcement’, you can listen to these tracks now on all major streaming platforms. We are desperately hoping for new music soon from Comic Sans, and it turns out that new tracks might be just around the corner. Speaking to the group, they seem keen to head back into the studio, and inspired with the idea of writing new music- Rach has even been starting the process of song writing on her bus journeys... Either way, fans can’t wait to hear more from Comic Sans and look forward to seeing them live again soon.
