ALTESCAPE_ have been fortunate enough to interview upcoming, rock/ post-hardcore band, Beyond Confidence, following the release of their latest single 'Goodbye'.
Beyond Confidence formed in 2019, and after releasing their first single, 'Weight Of The Water', in early September 2020, have been on a roll with putting out music each month since. The band consists of vocalist and lyricist, Nico Dachtler, guitarist, Sven Bürger, guitarist, Dominik Bolter, bassist, Jonas Wamsler, and drummer, Heiko Müller. Speaking of how the band got together, they said that: 'Sven and Jonas have played in a Metalcore band called "Scarecrow" before, and decided to start a new band together. They wanted to create heavy music, but with less or even without screams. Common friends introduced them to Heiko and Nico shortly after. Looking for a second guitarist, they've been searching in local musician online groups, and found Dominik who is also playing at a metal band called Circus of Fools.'
Asking the band, whether the 3 singles they have released, so far, will eventually become a part of a full album, they told us they are currently in the planning stage, and will probably hit the studios again in mid 2021. However, do not despair, the up and comers have got new music coming soon, they said: 'the production of a complete album is pretty expensive so we are going step-by-step. That's also how the market works right now I guess -so we will be releasing a couple of singles instead of dropping an album at once. So you'll hear new stuff soon but not as an album.'
We definitely will hear 'new stuff soon', in fact: this month! Beyond Confidence gave us an insight into what's coming next for the band. They will release another new single, 'Ghost town', on the 25th of December, and in regard to this track's main focus, the band said that 'the main theme is about being in a psychotic state of mind and being imprisoned, knowing there is no way out, it’s kind of a lost cause. The only way out is to “break the walls” which is not really possible. So we could say the message is to hold on even when times get really hard and challenging.'
In the group's previous releases, we have already witnessed this deep engagement with struggles with mental health, specifically depression, and hypomania. This is, especially, prevalent in 'Some Kind Of Blue', with lyrics, such as: "How can I fight my disease? This battle is unfair"? Asking Beyond Confidence about this reference to battling with internal conflicts, in 'Some Kind Of Blue', they regarded that 'The song deals with the topic of mental health issues such as depression and hypomania. The first verse is about doing anything possible to overcome the state of depression- “and I can’t seem to find light, to keep me alive”. Whereat “light” is like a metaphor for everything positive. In the second verse the hypomanic state of mind prevails over being rational and responsible. But in the end hypomania is only a phase and it will get better eventually.'
''Some Kind Of Blue' not only got an outstanding response on social media platforms, but is, arguably, the group's favourite track to have created. Asking Beyond Confidence to collectively decide their favourite single so far, they said: 'if you put a gun to our heads: Some Kind of Blue. There is something for every band member in it. A catchy chorus, heavy parts and you can simply go nuts while playing this one live on stage.'
Certainly, the song does have heavy parts, combined with a catchy Pop-punk style chorus. This distinct fusion between heavier, Post-hardcore influences, such as: impulsive drums, fast guitar riffs, and a breakdown, with Pop-punk attributes of natural and catchy vocals, creates a unique sound for the group- boosting their potential, and making them more successful with each single. ALTESCAPE_ wanted to gain a knowledge of the sort of artists that have had a great influence on the band. With their combination of musical backgrounds, Beyond Confidence said that: 'main influences might be, pop-punk bands like Blink 182 or A Day to Remember. But, also, other modern rock & metal bands in general are pretty important to us, like Bring me the Horizon, Papa Roach or Linkin Park.'
It was a pleasure speaking directly with the band, and we wait in anticipation for their upcoming single 'Ghosttown'.
